Iâve wanted to do that for years now.â But in reality, that type of job exit is never smart for your career and professional reputation. When youâre thinking of leaving your job, there are things to consider in three phases of the separation: (1) things to think about before you even begin to apply for a new job, (2) considerations to keep in mind as you look for a new job while youâre still employed, and (3) how to leave your current job gracefully. Before You Start Your Job Search When you decide to start looking for another position, take the time to review your career achievements and make a list of your accomplishments. If you havenât been collecting accomplishments all along, now is the time to start. This information will be useful in developing your résumé as well as in interviews. Make copies of documents that support your accomplishments (unless company policy prohibits it). You may not have access to this information once you submit your resignation â" especially if you are asked to leave immediately Three things to consider once you are ready to resign: Does your company have a policy or guideline about how much notice you should provide? You should also check your employee handbook and any employment agreement you have with the company. If youâve worked at the company for any length of time, you should have some idea of how resignations are handled. Does your boss ask the resigning employee to leave immediately, or do they generally ask him or her to stay on until a replacement is found? How much time is it customary to offer to stay? You should always offer to stay two weeks, but have a contingency plan in place if youâre asked to leave immediately. Before you notify your supervisor of your resignation, make sure you are prepared to leave. You donât want to tip anyone off that youâre leaving â" things like taking your photos off your desk or boxing up personal items on your bookshelf are noticeable â" but you can quietly clean out your desk and files. This includes cleaning off your work computer. If you have personal documents on your computer, save them to a jump drive or CD, and then delete the originals from your computer. You can forward any personal email messages you want to save to your non-work email address, and then delete the originals. (Be sure to delete messages in your âsent mailâ folder too.) If you have online accounts that use your business email address for the log-in, change the accounts over to your personal email. If you downloaded software to your computer that isnât related to your job, be sure to uninstall it. And, finally, learn how to delete your computerâs browsing history, cookies, and saved passwords from your Internet browser. When cleaning out your desk and files, shred or trash old files that wonât be needed by your successor. If you bring home a few personal items at a time, it wonât be as noticeable. The goal is to be able to easily bring home all of your personal belongings in one or two boxes â" and, to be able to leave your job without leaving behind any personal information. *** This series of blog posts will cover additional topics that relate to leaving your job: conducting a job search while still employed, how and when to tell your supervisor that you are leaving, writing a resignation letter, making a successful job transition and the etiquette of departure. By adding these activities and free time to your schedule you will ensure that you get some much needed mommy time and that your family spends quality time together. You will find that if your leisure and family time suffer too much, your relationships will suffer as well. Make time for the fun things and times shared with children and family. If you implement these ideas into your life as a work at home mom, you will be better able to achieve balance between work and your home life. Seattle $15 Minimum Wage Supreme Court Rejects Challenge The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear a challenge by business groups to a trendsetting Seattle law that will raise the cityâs minimum wage to $15 an hour, leaving in place a lower courtâs decision to uphold the statute.The law, which took effect in April 2015, requires businesses in Seattle with more than 500 employees nationwide to raise their minimum wage to $15 by 2018. Smaller companies have until 2021 to do so. Seattle was the first major U.S. city to commit to such a high basic wage amid pressure from unions and workersâ rights groups. The move has since been followed to varying degrees by cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles as well as by state lawmakers in California and New York. The International Franchise Associationâs 2014 lawsuit took issue with the Seattle lawâs treatment of local franchises as subsidiaries of brand parents such as McDonaldâs or Burger King rather than independent businesses, meaning they had to comply by the earlier deadline. A federal judge in Seattle in March 2015 rejected claims that the ordinance was discriminatory, and the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last year agreed. Seattle officials and the Service Employees International Union, which backed the city in the case, said franchises are not typical small businesses because franchising offers inherent advantages such as access to loans, brand recognition and bulk purchasing. But the franchise association countered that those perks come at a cost, namely royalties, fees and rent. The case is International Franchise Association v. City of Seattle, U.S. Supreme Court, No. 15-958.

If youâre unfamiliar with ATS, itâs commonly used by employers â" especially medium to large corporations â" to help manage applications and resumes that come in for an open position. It essentially helps hiring managers clear out job candidates who do not have the required experience and skills to fulfill the position, and it highlights for them the ones that do. Unfortunately that means as much as 75% of the applicant pool is eliminated from consideration without the hiring manager even looking at their resume. While the ATS can help simplify the process to finding the right candidate for hiring managers, it does not always recognize the very best candidates that apply for the job. If the job applicant doesnât have the exact matching keywords, specifications, and requirements entered for the system on their resume and if the resume is improperly formatted for the ATS to read, it wonât receive a high ranking. So, hereâs how you can help improve your resumeâs ranking with the ATS: Donât overstuff with keywords, but use the right keywords and phrases. Many misunderstand and stuff their resume with keywords, but in fact, the ATS is looking for specific keywords and phrases that are used in context â" not just have a word dump of keywords. Carefully review the job posting to understand what keywords and phrases are important to apply to your resume and put it in context with other content. Send a Word document, not a PDF. There are tips out there to send a PDF file of your resume when applying for a job so that no formatting is lost, but when youâre dealing with the ATS, it is best to send a Word document. The ATS searches for specific fields on the resume and when it formatted as a PDF, it may be unable to properly read it. Send your resume in .doc format so every system can read it. Forget about Word tables and text boxes. The ATS cannot read MS word and text boxes so avoid using them. Also It also canât read fancy fonts so you want to stick with fairly traditional font styles like Calibri, Cambria, Tahoma, Arial, and Times New Roman. Properly label your sections. Donât try to make your resume unique by labeling the sections of your resume differently. The ATS doesnât know to interpret âOutstanding Achievementsâ as âWork Experienceâ and will simply skip over the entire section where there may be the most information to indicate you have the qualifications for the job. You also want to lay out information under Work Experience in the following ATS-friendly-readable fashion: Employerâs name, Job Title, Dates of Employment. Avoid starting with dates of employment first because that will cause the ATS to read your information improperly. Other key labels to include to your resume include Profile or Profile Summary, Education, Certifications, and Affiliations. Note that while proper labelling of the sections is necessary, you can still customize it â" for example, âProfile: IT Networking Engineer.â Watch out for acronyms. The ATS may be looking for acronyms or the spelled-out form of the word so be sure to enter both if you donât want to miss the boat. And if youâre going to use â/,â which is quite common in the IT profession, have a space between it like âNetworking / Programming.â The ATS may not read âNetworking/Programmingâ as two separate keyword matches. Clearly the game of getting your resume noticed has changed, but it ultimately still has to go through the human reviewer. Remember that while customizing your resume for the ATS, the content needs to also appeal to the human reviewer who will be looking to see how your specific experience and skills may be applied to the job to help its company.
